| Bio: | It’s been a while since I had any info here, so here’s a bit about me… There are turning points in life, some are big and some are small. The one that really matter are where you take a step back and look at what you can do to reach out and live your dreams. I recently have been to hell and back, thankfully the only hell I live in now is my own private hell, but that suits me to well. I’m usually not one for blowing my own trumpet and I’m not going to make a habit of it so this is probably the only time I’m going to do this in a public place. After some problems and issues, I took a step back and looked at what I could do and I wanted to do. Over the past few years I had not been living my life my thunder was not my own. Recently I have taken control back of my life and now I’m looking at what I can do and to be honest I have to say ‘I’m Good.’ I have always been interested in design and communication through visual language, this covered every medium. I never thought I would be able to go beyond design for the print industry. Then I took a long hard look at what I could do and what I have done, and compared what I can do to what others earn a living doing. This is where I have to say I come in the category of a shit hot Graphic Designer. I have looked at other people who get paid to do what I do and to be honest their work is shit. None of them seem to know anything about design not even the basics of proportion and minimalism. Bauhaus, Memphis, Macintosh and Alfonso Mucha are some of the big swingers and influences of all modern design. Yet people who get paid hideous amounts of money don’t even understand the basic concepts that the people and movements gave us. It’s true to design something you don’t need to be an artist, but to design something fantastic you do need the inspiration of an artist. This lack of talent is why a lot of modern design and DTP is like painting by numbers you’re only going to get cookie cutter work done by monkeys. “Just knowing your way around Adobe products does not make a person a graphic designer, visual communication skills do.” It’s only recently I have been looking at what I want out of life. I still love graphic design and visual communication. Yet I think my real calling is in Production Design for film and television. Yes this is the hardest job you could ever imagine in this field. A Production Designer works with the director to set the tone and overall look of the film. They co-ordinate all the other design departments and artists, commission the SFX teams, source the materials for the sets and generally manage all aspect that effect the look of the film. As a Production Designer I would be the first person to be employed on a film because I’m the one who can say how much A Set or Special Effect B will cost. Once the financing has been worked out, I have to pick a team of artists and designers and co-ordinate them to produce a sold and coherent look to the production. Attention to detail on a production is vital and the term a picture can paint a thousand words come into its own. As a Production Designer my job would not end at the concept stage, I will be working with set dressers, the props department, and probably a good way in to post-production. Every one thinks the Director is the coordinator for everything, this is untrue. The Production Designer is the usually the right hand man of the Director, working very closely with them to make sure the visual look of the film is exactly what the director wants and portrays the necessary messages. You may be wondering why I would want to do such a demanding and insane job. Well it’s probably the only job which radically changes every few months, as no two productions are the same. It’s exciting and challenging. If I’m really honest the prospect of working on a movie scares the living crap out of me, just because of the shear scale of things and the amount of departments that need deadlines to be met. No matter how scary it may seem it’s a challenge I welcome, something that will give me a buzz like the best rollercoaster ride in the world. As a whole it’s scary but when you look at the individual parts it’s nothing but a series of ups and downs with a few well placed curves. But when you step back it’s on a set of rails so you’re going to get from start to finish safely after having a hell of a ride. So this is making me go back to University to study for 3 years, also I’m going to be doing as much work experience and top up courses I can. I already have a lot of skills needed for the job, but I’m missing some of the vital technical skills dealing with HDTV cameras and Avid systems. The best way to describe this degree is that it’s the modern version of what Kevin Smith did before making Clerks. I stand a 90% chance of leaving University and landing a job with a major TV Company or film studio, that’s how good this course is. I guess not living your own life for many years then hitting a point where you step back and examine yourself is a good thing. I have to say there are a lot of people in this world who should do this, as you cannot really make your dreams come true if you helping someone else reach theirs.
